TRIEZE: London West End Edition

Rather than positioning itself as another satellite fair or commercial pop-up orbiting Frieze, TRIEZE is attempting something different: giving artists control not only over how their work is exhibited, but over the conversations that surround it.

That distinction is particularly relevant to the five artists involved. Their practices have roots in public space, where artists have long been able to reach audiences outside museums and galleries. Collectively, they work across muralism, painting, printmaking, sculpture and installation, with work appearing in public spaces, galleries and collections across Europe, Asia and the Americas.

TRIEZE argues that while artists working in public spaces can reach millions and are collected internationally, they remain underrepresented in some of the institutional and critical conversations that influence recognition and the contemporary art market.

The project isn’t framed as a rejection of that existing system.

“TRIEZE is not about replacing galleries or institutions. It is about helping more people feel that art belongs to them,”

says the TRIEZE Collective.

“For years, artists working in public spaces have built direct relationships with communities by creating work that invites curiosity rather than intimidation. We want to bring that same openness into the gallery, creating a place where artists can speak for themselves and where everyone feels welcome to join the conversation.”

That conversation extends beyond the exhibition itself. A programme of talks and events will look at how the relationship between artists, audiences and the wider art world is changing.

Walls to Gallery will bring the artists together to discuss the move from public walls into gallery spaces and how their practices have evolved, while legal scholar Professor Enrico Bonadio will lead Copyright & Street Art, exploring authorship, ownership and artists’ rights in public space.

Artist one-to-one sessions will give visitors the opportunity to speak directly with participating artists about their work, influences and careers, with further discussions tackling collecting, public art, artistic independence and the changing relationship between street culture and contemporary art.

At the centre of the project are Code FC, Jay Kaes, Otto Schade, Fin DAC and Pez Barcelona, five artists whose careers demonstrate some of the increasingly porous boundaries between street art, public art and the gallery.

TRIEZE describes itself as neither a satellite fair, gallery project nor conventional pop-up. Instead, the emphasis is on turning the exhibition into a place for discussion as much as display, and making the gallery environment more accessible to audiences who might not ordinarily enter one.

That makes Frieze Week an interesting moment to stage it. As collectors, galleries, institutions and artists descend on London for one of the busiest weeks in the international art calendar, TRIEZE offers a deliberately smaller proposition alongside it: five artists taking control of the space, their work and, perhaps most importantly, the conversation around it.
