Urs Lüthi
Until October 25, Kunsttempel and Galerie Coucou present in "... Die Sehnsucht stirbt zuletzt ..." (Longing Dies Last) works from all phases of Urs Lüthis’ career. Through photographs, videos, installations, paintings, and sculptures, the show is the result of Lüthi’senduring Kassel ties and offers insights into more than six decades of his artistic work.

In this fall, Kunsttempel and Gallery Coucou present "... Die Sehnsucht stirbt zuletzt ..." (Longing Dies Last) featuring the works of internationally renowned artist Urs Lüthi (born 1947). Until October 25, selected works spanning more than six decades are on view at both venues.
The artist's relationship with the documenta Stadt Kassel dates back a long time. Lüthi participated in documenta 6 in 1977 and taught for twenty years at the Kunsthochschule Kassel. In 2009, he was awarded the Arnold Bode Prize. Lüthi also shares a personal professional relationship with the curator of the exhibition Milen Krastev, who was his former student at the academy. Following solo exhibitions at Galerie Coucou in 2014 and 2017, this year's exhibition serves as a tribute and a profound, personal show offering unique insights into Lüthi's central themes.

The exhibition features works from all phases of Lüthis’ career. Born in 1947, Lüthi encountered many contemporary art styles that shaped modern artistic understanding, though his own work resists easy categorization. He gained prominence in the 1970s through photographic works like Numbergirl (1973) shown at Kunsttempel, where he staged himself as an androgynous artistic figure.
Lüthi's signature self-irony, born from exploring the contradictions of reality, is evident in works like The enemy (2018) at Gallery Coucou. This detailed sculpture of Lüthi depicts an aging human figure complete with wrinkles, stubble, and chewed fingernails. Dressed in running gear, the figure humorously addresses our pursuit of ideals that change throughout life.
The exhibition opening on September 4 was accompanied by a film crew from Swiss television (SRF) and 3sat, intended for a major retrospective at the Kunstmuseum Luzern in 2027 celebrating Lüthi's 80th birthday. Alongside Galerie Coucou and Kunsttempel, Lüthi is also featured at Neue Galerie (Hessen Kassel Heritage) this fall. Born in Kriens, Switzerland, he currently lives and works in Munich and Kassel. His works are held in prestigious public and private collections worldwide, including the Centre Pompidou, MoMA, and SFMOMA.
