ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

Carsten Höller: Two is the artist’s first institutional solo exhibition in China. Installed throughout UCCA Beijing’s Great Hall, the exhibition brings together iconic participatory works and new projects in an environment the artist describes as a “Laboratory of Doubt.”

Höller draws on his scientific training to create situations in which perception, choice and behaviour are placed under pressure. Repetition, doubling, play, sleep and collective experience recur throughout the exhibition, while visitors become active participants rather than detached observers.

The exhibition’s emphasis on the double reflects Höller’s long-standing interest in parallel possibilities and uncertain outcomes. By creating environments that oscillate between pleasure and disorientation, the work asks visitors to reconsider how reality is perceived and how experience changes when certainty is suspended.
